CSPP Marital & Family Therapy Graduate Programs

The California School of Professional Psychology offers two graduate programs in Marital and Family Therapy: the Master of Arts (MA) in Marital and Family Therapy and the Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) in Marital and Family Therapy. The MA program is offered in Irvine, Los Angeles, Sacramento and San Diego and the PsyD program is offered in Irvine, Sacramento and San Diego.

CSPP’s Marital and Family Therapy (MFT) graduate program provides students with the essential training needed to pursue a career as a professional marital and family therapist. The MFT program prepares graduate students who are skilled in theory, research and clinical practice, with the ability to integrate individual and systemic therapeutic models in an international, multicultural environment.

Students in the MFT program have the opportunity to complete any or all of the first three semesters of the program in Mexico City through the MFT Mexico City Satellite program, which includes a summer semester of Spanish Language and Cultural Immersion in Mexico City. Students may also elect to earn a Certificate in Latin American Family Therapy.

Follow the links below for comprehensive information about the program at each campus location:

Famed Faculty

Our students work with a dedicated, caring, highly skilled faculty including leading couple therapist Susan Johnson and family chemical dependency expert Ann Lawson. Several of the texts used in classes have been written by program faculty.

CSPP’s Marital and Family Therapy programs have been in continuous existence since 1973, and have had many of the leading pioneers of the field teach in them including Maurizio Andolfi, Ivan Bosormenyi-Nagy, James Framo, Edwin Friedman, Jay Haley, Susan Johnson, Norman Paul, Virginia Satir and Carl Whitaker.

Real World Training

To prepare students for the clinical practicum experience, our MFT programs provide intensive theoretical and practical skill based training. The programs place students in community based practicum and internship sites where students get real world training experiences with a diverse clientele. Students are supervised by professionals who have had specific training in MFT supervision and meet rigorous supervision standards.

Diversity

CSPP's MFT programs are firmly committed to diversity and attract students from around the world including Africa, North, Central and South America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Our program faculty and supervisors represent a variety of racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds including African, Asian, European, Latin American and Middle Eastern. Additionally, MFT faculty have taught or trained in a variety of places including Argentina, Canada, China, England, Finland, Guam, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Scotland, South Africa, Taiwan and Zimbabwe.

Coursework and Specialization

Students in both the master’s and doctoral MFT programs are trained to treat relational mental health issues with individuals, couples, families and larger organizations from a systemic perspective. As such, attention is directed to relationships and interaction patterns. Students develop skills in the mental health assessment, diagnosis and treatment of individuals and relationship systems. The programs provide an integrative approach to the major systemic theories and interventions.

The master’s program contains the same coursework as the first two years of the doctoral program. Consequently, all of the master’s program requirements transfer into the doctoral program. Those students entering the doctoral program with a bachelor’s degree can earn a licensable marital and family therapy master’s degree as part of their doctoral studies upon completion of the requirements for that degree.

In addition to the program coursework and practicum experiences, students may choose to specialize in select areas of concentration offered at their campus, including:

  • Biofeedback
  • Chemical Dependency Counseling
  • Gerontology
  • Latin American Family Therapy

Convenient Class Schedule

Classes are typically held in the evenings to allow students to work during the day. Daytime classes are also held in San Diego and Irvine for students who prefer to attend during the day. The MFT program operates on a semester system, with 16-week semesters starting in September and January, and a shortened summer semester starting in May. Students are encouraged to attend full-time, but also have the option to attend part-time.
