Immersion Program in Mexico City

You are invited to apply to participate in this year’s California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) Spanish Language and Cultural Immersion Program in Mexico City! The immersion program is designed for individuals interested in being part of a “think-tank” on ways to improve mental health approaches with Latino communities. The program and courses also meet a majority of the requirements for the CSPP Certificate in Latin American Family Therapy.

The dates of the Immersion Program in Mexico are July 5, 2009 to August 7, 2009. Participants will be expected to have completed readings and assignments during the five weeks prior to arrival in Mexico on July 5. We hope that you will be able to join us for this year’s program!

The Immersion Program includes:
    A Freireian approach to education
    Latin American originating mental health theories, such as Liberation Psychology
    Spanish coursework tailored for mental health professionals
    Information on indigenous healing practices
    Lectures on topics such as current political and social issues in Mexico, LGBT issues in Mexico, immigration, local economics and politics, art, Liberation Psychology, and much more.

Program Fee
The program fee is $3,500 and this includes all of your housing, Spanish coursework and materials, the majority of breakfasts and suppers for the first four weeks, lectures, entrance fees to program activities, and travel to communities in Guanajuato, Jalisco and Michoacan. The fee does not include your flight to Mexico City or tuition for any of the classes in which you choose to enroll. Typically financial aid is available. Please meet with your local campus financial aid office to make arrangements.

Application Requirements
  •  Applicants must be currently enrolled and in good standing in a university mental health training program or have graduated from an accredited mental health training  program.
  •  Applicants must submit an essay describing why they are interested in being part of the Immersion Program and a member of the program think-tank. Essays should be  sent via email to Dr. Jason Platt.
  •  Email Ms. Gillian Honey to arrange a time for a telephone interview.

1. Email Dr. Jason Platt and confirm that you are planning to participate in this year’s immersion program.
2. Send a non-refundable deposit of $250, using the credit card authorization form, to Thomas Swank to secure your spot for this year’s program.
3. Apply for a passport if you do not already have one. For more information, please consult the State Department website.
