Admission to Alliant
- Possess a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
- Have an overall grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for undergraduate coursework or a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for master's level work
- Complete the university’s written application forms with requisite fee.
- Submit two (2) letters of recommendation addressing competency in and capacity to teach in California schools and to excel in graduate level academic studies.
- Professional Written Statement addressing the candidate’s Philosophy of Education, the candidate’s activities toward advancing that philosophy as well as the candidate’s educational background, knowledge, skills and experiences that would classify the candidate as a “highly qualified teacher.”

Candidates who enroll in our San Francisco Student Teaching Program to earn a California Preliminary Teaching Credential will attend evening classes, choosing a part-time or full-time course load.
After successfully completing all state-mandated examinations and at least 12 units of coursework, you may enter student teaching.
Upon completion of coursework, student teaching, and other mandated requirements, you are ready to enter the classroom as a preliminary credentialed teacher-of-record with full salary and benefits. Many individuals entering teaching prefer a more traditional classroom setting where they can study theory and pedagogy while preparing to meet the real-life needs of California’s diverse student population.
Candidates in our Student Teaching pathway work on earning a California Preliminary Teaching Credential while attending evening classes and choosing a part-time or full-time course load. After successfully completing all state-mandated examinations and at least 12 units of coursework, you may enter student teaching.
Upon completion of coursework, student teaching, and other mandated requirements, you are ready to enter the classroom as a preliminary credentialed teacher-of-record with full salary and benefits.
Before beginning your student teaching placement at a California accredited K-12 school, you will:
- Be fully admitted to Alliant Graduate School of Education
- Complete at least 14 units of teacher education coursework, at least eight units of which must have been completed in residence at Alliant (including school site practicum)
- Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better at Alliant in teacher preparation coursework with no “D” or “F” grade
- Pass the CSET (Single Subject or Multiple Subjects) or, for Single Subject, obtain a Single Subject matter equivalency letter from an approved University (see weblink to CCTC) in the appropriate subject area prior to beginning student teaching
- Have a Certificate of Clearance on file with the Credentials Office
- Complete a student teaching placement form
- Be recommended for placement as a student teacher by the program director
