| | Above: Students at the International Friendship Festival on Alliant's Scripps Ranch Campus | Hispanic students, the largest majority at Alliant, are actively involved in every aspect of university life. For example, the Latino Student Psychological Association (LSPA) was developed by Los Angeles graduate students dedicated to supporting the needs of Latino/a students and students interested in Latino/a mental health issues. LSPA advocates student networking and professional development to build leaders in the field of Latino/a Psychology.
During the 2005-06 academic year, LSPA brought five speakers to campus for presentations on issues related to the physical and mental health of Latinos. Several of the members organized training for peer supervision among students who are conducting psychotherapy with Spanish-speaking clients. “We hope that students will have a great opportunity to network and find potential mentors, doctoral project consultants, field training placements, and jobs,” said Social Events Coordinator, Milagros Zambrano. In 2002, Alliant received a Title V grant from the US Department of Education to expand its capacity to serve Hispanic and low-income students. At the time, one-quarter of the University’s full-time undergraduates were Hispanic. Alliant used the grant to expand education opportunities for, and improve the academic attainment of, Hispanic and other at-risk undergraduate students. Much of the grant was used to create Alliant’s Academic Success Center, part of the Center for Undergraduate Education (CUE). The ASC provides assistance in writing and math through personalized tutoring and computer-based instruction. Undergraduate students receive individualized help in the areas that are most challenging. In addition to an open area for collaborative study and meeting with tutors, there are also Undergraduate Writing, Math, and Technology Labs, where students receive specialized tutoring.
